Launching the Beta of qrop docs, an Agriculture News Curation Service

2019.07.19

We recently launched the beta version of qrop docs, our agricultural news curation service!

URL: https://docs.qrop.app/

Why agriculture in the first place?

I was born into a sake rice farming family in Hyogo Prefecture, and even before I planned to take over the family farm, I wanted to improve the environment surrounding agriculture today. My parents have always said that farming doesn't pay, and agriculture is often described using the "3 K's" — kitsui (grueling), kitanai (dirty), kiken (dangerous). I believe that with the right systems, farming can become profitable, and that technology could make things easier and help produce better crops more easily than today. With that in mind, I decided, from the moment I went independent, that I would run a service related to agriculture myself, and this time I launched this service because I wanted to use technology to help solve agriculture's challenges.

What does "qrop" mean?

We took the word crop — meaning a harvested crop or produce, and also "to cut off" — and twisted it together with the q from quality (meaning quality or good characteristics) and quantity (meaning volume),

  • From "quality crop" and "quantity of crop": to be a force that raises the quality and quantity of crops, and to spread good-quality produce
  • From crop's meaning of "cutting off": to cut away unnecessary work and make things more efficient

and named it qrop.

What's next?

qrop aims to become an agricultural application platform. For now, docs is our only news curation feature, but other features are already in development! As a whole team, we're working toward a future where "if you're doing agriculture, of course you use qrop!"
